History of the organisation on Food Side:
The Prevention of Food Adulteration Act 1954 was enacted and made applicable to the whole of nation.
The enforcement of the Act in the State of Maharashtra was initiated in the beginning¸ by the local bodies such as Bombay Municipal Corporation, Pune Municipal Corporation etc. and the Municipal Councils such as Pandharpur, Aurangabad, Thane, Karad¸ Miraj, and Nagpur etc. The enforcement was mainly focused on adulteration of milk ¸ and controlling cholera epidemics.
In 1970 a separate department ‘Food and Drug Administration’ was established in the State of Maharashtra¸ in which Drug Control Administration was merged and the Act was made applicable to entire State including all local areas, up to Panchayat level.
In 1972, 200 Food Inspectors were appointed in the State. In 1976 licensing under the said Act was made applicable to the entire state. However prior to this licensing continued to be with the local bodies enforcing the Act in their jurisdiction.
Transfer of work of the local bodies to Food and Drug Administration., is under process.
