  1. Where is F.D.A.’s Office?
    Head office of F.D.A Maharashtra is situated at Survey No. 341, Bandra- Kurla Complex, Bandra (east), Mumbai -400 051.


  2. How do I reach the FDA Office in Mumbai?
    The nearest Railway station on the Western line is Bandra (1Km) and on Central line is Kurla (3 Km) . From the station to reach the FDA premises you can hire a taxi, rickshaw or take City bus no 310 for Bandra-Kurla Complex, “Reserve Bank of India stop”.


  3. How do I lodge a complaint with the FDA?
    You can lodge a complaint with the nearest District /Divisional Office orally or in writing. You can contact personally, on telephone, send e-mail or post a letter.


  4. Which products are considered as drugs?
    The following products are considered as drugs. bulk drugs, formulations, disinfectants, contraceptives, and empty gelatin capsules, medical devices, Diagnostics.


  5. Can I make a complaint on the phone?
    Yes, complaint can be lodged on phone.


  6. Are licenses for manufacture and sale of Cosmetics and Ayurvedic drugs required?
    Manufacturing license is required for manufacture of Cosmetics and Ayurvedic drugs. However, for sale of cosmetics, selling license is not necessary.


  7. If the district office refuses to take my complaint, what to do?
    You can lodge the complaint at Divisional Office or the Commissioner Office.


  8. How do I meet the Commissioner, FDA?
    You can meet the Commissioner by taking prior appointment on all working days. In case of emergency one can meet the Commissioner on all working days between 11.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.


  9. What does the FDA do?
    FDA is responsible for ensuring that available medicines are safe and efficacious, and sold at stated price. It also ensures food is available safe and unadulterated .


  10. With what sort of food item is the FDA concerned?
    FDA is concerned with all food items including drinks.


  11. With what sort of the drugs is the FDA concerned?
    FDA is concerned with Allopathic, Homoepathic, Ayurvedic, Siddha, and Unani drugs.


  12. When I purchase a medicine from a chemist, what should I do?
    When you purchase medicine insist on cash memo. Verify expiry date and price mentioned on label.


  13. If the chemist refuses to give me a cash memo, what should I do?
    In such a situation lodge a complaint with the nearest F.D.A. office.


  14. Is it possible to find out adulteration in food items without going to any laboratory?
    Yes one can detect adulteration in food items using simple household
    methods as given below:

    Measure the specific gravity with lactometer. The normal milk values will fall between 1.030 and 1.034

    Turmeric

    Metanil Yellow colour Starch Powder

    Put turmeric powder in concentrated hydrochloric acid the colour of turmeric turns slightly blackish (magnetic colour).
    Add 2 to 3 drops of iodine solution to tumeric powder. The turmeric powder will turn blue
    .

    Chillies

    Colours

    Sprinkle on the surface of water chillie powder.
    Added colour will stain water.

    4.

    Pure Coffee

     

    Chicory

    Shake a small quantity in cold
    water .Coffee will  float while
    chicory will sink, staining the  
    water brownish red.

    5.

    Asafoetida

    Resin or gum, scented and coloured

    1. Pure asafetida dissolves in water to form milk-white solution.
    2. Pure asafoetida bums with a bright flame on being ignited.

  15. What precaution should I take while using a cosmetic?
    Following precautions should be taken:
    1. Always use cosmetics before the “BEST BEFORE PERIOD” as claimed on the label.
    2. Maintain the storage conditions as mentioned on the label.
    3. Carry out the skin reaction test as mentioned on label.
